IN:
EXT.
DEATH VALLEY, SALT CREEK DRY LAKE – MORNING, AUGUST 2002
Reflections
of the summer sun glint in WIND rippled water. Silhouettes of BIRDS pass
overhead. We see a MAN floating, face down in a large, NATURAL, POOL of water.
The shallow pool is devoid of vegetation and rests at the edge of a vast dry
lake. Briefly on screen; ‘AUGUST 2002’
Silver
hair, cut military-style, and a wrinkled neck indicate old age. But the man’s
body is still powerfully built. His RIGHT LEG is badly BROKEN and skewed,
grotesquely, to one side. He wears a black T-SHIRT with ‘Cripple Creek’
displayed in FADED WHITE LETTERS around a simple, multi-hued, blue MOUNTAIN
LOGO. He is wearing worn Khaki colored HIKING SHORTS and is BAREFOOT.
ANOTHER
ANGLE – AERIAL SHOT
Below,
a HAWK and several BLACK RAVENS circle the body.
ANOTHER
ANGLE
CU,
the body’s right hand is facing palm up, with the thumb caught in a belt loop.
The HAWK lands awkwardly on the body, causing it to bob. A SILVER reflection
flares from the center of the palm and a METAL OBJECT falls out and in to the
pool.
ANOTHER
ANGLE
Upset
by the body’s undulating motion, the bird flies off circling for another
opportunity. Heat waves distort our view of TALL ROCK OUTCROPPINGS at the far
end of the pool. A WHITE with GREEN STRIPE ‘PARK RANGER’ FORD EXPEDITION
drives up, it’s POLICE LIGHTS whirling.
ANOTHER
ANGLE
A WORN COWBOY BOOT steps out of the driver’s side door and onto hard earth. The RANGER exits, closes the door, revealing the LOGO that says “Death Valley National Park” “Park Ranger”. We look up in to the bright summer sun, SOLARIZATION. The bright white light fades slowly to black.
